The Only Constant

What is time? How can we define Time? The question should be that can we define time? Or is it the time that defines us. Is time a thing? Can we touch it or see it? Is it a resource? Is it a commodity? Is it a constraint on humans? Is it guide or coach or supporter or counsellor or preacher or speaker of truth? Or is time the only thing defined in this universe? Is it never ending? Does time defines everything that happens around us and in our universe. Is time a medicine or a healer? Is it an investment or is it everything? Or we don’t really know what time really is?

For a clergyman, TIME stands for “Technical Instrument for the measurement of Existence.” The Greek thinker Aristotle defines time as “the calculable measure of motion with respect to before and after. Physicists define time as the progression of events from the past to the present into the future. Time is considered to be the fourth dimension of reality, used to describe events in three dimensional space. Stephen Hawking (Greatest of all time) claims that our brain measures time in a way where disorder increases in the direction of time. We never observe it working in the opposite direction. In other words, hawking claims that psychological arrow of time is intertwined with the thermodynamics arrow of time. In language of a layman, Albert Einstein said “time is what a clock is used to measure”.

A layman often comes across multiple definitions of time and some being relatable and some being not very relatable. Time being such a vast and interesting topic should not have multiple definitions at different instances.

For example:

I)                 In English time is just an abstract noun i.e. we cannot touch it and see it but we come across the saying that “time will tell …” .Now what is that supposed to mean? Does that mean that time has a mouth but no physical form? Confusing a little.

II)               It is said, “The key is not spending time, but is investing in it”. Both line tend to indicate that time is a commodity. But the question now arises is that is it an asset or liability. And the fact that time is for sure a commodity is that it is limited for every individual. But is money time? Can money buy time? The answer comes out to be a big NO. But time can guide us to make assets.

III)              It is said, “Time is the wisest counsellor of all”, “Time waits for no one”, “and the two most powerful warriors are patience and time.” These all statements indicate that time is a partner/guide/counsellor for humans.  It is often heard that things get better with time. This means that our life is a sport or game, we individuals are the players and time guides us as a coach to play the game. If we fall, time gives us a lesson i.e. experiences and if we win it prepares us for the next round. And sometimes in order to check our attentiveness it throws some out of the box questions.

But what else does a counsellor do? A counsellor also heals you/ takes care of you when needed. “Time cures everything”. “Time heals everything”. Time is a multi-utility medicine. It is not subdivided/ categorized like homeopathy or Ayurveda. It heals depending on the situation. Sometimes too quick sometimes a little slow, but heals for sure.

At the end we conclude that time is a medicine, supporter and a resource. By the orders of Almighty, Time is destined to flow and we humans are bond to flow with time. The more we flow with time, the more time will be able to act as a supporter, as a resource and a medicine to us. It’s not the time that matters. It’s flowing with and in accordance to time that matters.
